DATE: Victorian, c.1900
Fantastic Victorian 5-stone scroll ring set with alternating royal blue sapphires and old Euro diamonds. The gallery has been intricately carved to display scrolling openworked motifs that blend seamlessly into the claws securing the stones in place when the viewpoint is switched. Somewhat unusually for this style, the diamonds are set in platinum, indicating it's a slightly later example crafted around the turn of the 20th century when platinum usurped silver as the high-end white metal of choice (more often than not these rings date from 1870-1890). The sapphires display a vivid, velvety royal blue colour, and the principal diamonds each weigh a half carat, with further diamond accents nestled between the corners of the principal stones.
